How to Write a Cover Letter for Internships. Written by Laura Riley. Updated April 10, 2017. Laura Riley is a writer who specializes in career advice and professional development. She has a Master’s degree in Student Affairs and Higher Education from black cowboys, Miami University. You’ve heard it before: “No one actually reads a cover letter.” “Cover letters are pointless.” There’s actually proof that writing an how to write, outstanding cover letter can get you an cowboys, internship. If you’re thinking, “Hmm I’m really not sold on cognitive map psychology this whole perfect cover letter thing.” Or maybe you’ve heard that college students don’t really need them.
Hang tight. I’m going to black cowboys, explain exactly what a professional cover letter is, why you need one, and most importantly, I’ll outline a step-by-step process to help you write an outstanding cover letter. And the best part? This article includes multiple, full-length cover letter samples. These samples will help you write a solid cover letter from beginning to end. One that’s good enough to History: Removal, secure your dream internship. Before we jump in, let’s take a look at exactly what’s included in this article : I’m sure this comes as no surprise: As a college student, you will likely apply for cowboys, internships (if you haven’t already!) As you may know, students who have internship experience increase their chance of securing a full-time job offer upon graduation. Many interns actually accept offers before they even graduate. According to human services of ethics, a study conducted by Vault, 73% of student interns said they received or expected to receive a full-time offer from their internship employer . Internships and cooperative education programs (co-ops) give you an opportunity to gain experience in your desired career field prior to graduation. By gaining hands-on, specialized experience, you become more competitive in the job market.
Internship experience is important. To secure an internship, you need to submit a quality resumé, cover letter, and at times, additional application requirements. If you submit an outstanding application, you’ll receive an invitation to interview. And if you hit your interview out of the park, you’ll receive an internship or job offer. This means that believing the myth that cover letters are irrelevant can be detrimental to your professional success. Your resumé and cover letter are the foundation of your success as a job applicant. Your cover letter basically exists to black cowboys, tell a company, “Hey, I really, really, really want this internship.” In a more professional way, of course.
A professional cover letter is an important document to send in with your résumé when applying to a job. It provides additional information about united v nixon case brief why you are the best candidate for the job. After the black, employer reads your cover letter, you want them to read your resumé, check out your LinkedIn profile, visit your online portfolio, or better yet, do all three. On nearly every social media site, the first thing you do is create a profile, or at minimum, a username. Write! Let’s take Instagram for cowboys, example. When you land on an Instagram profile for the very first time, you quickly scan the user’s bio and the photos at the top of learning skills their feed.
If you aren’t immediately engaged by what you see, you probably won’t come back. Follow for black cowboys, a follow? No thanks. The same thing happens in the job search. Map Psychology! Your cover letter acts as your Instagram bio. Your cover letter offers a first impression of who you are as a professional and what you’re all about. Cowboys! It’s your chance to Removal Act Essay, grab a recruiter’s attention. This means your cover letter has to be good! While you unfortunately can’t use emojis to amplify your cover letter, you can still make your cover letter interesting to read. It’s your job to cowboys, engage the hiring manager, recruiter, or search committee. In a sense, you want them to follow you.
You want them to map psychology, double-tap your activity and leave comments like, “We would love to hire you!” If you’re thinking, “ But that’s not always the case. Cowboys! People don’t always read cover letters .” You’re right. How To Write! There are definitely recruiters who don’t read cover letters. But for every recruiter who doesn’t read your cover letter, there’s a recruiter who bases their entire hiring decision on black how good your cover letter is. I recently talked to a hiring manager who was shocked at the number of applicants who didn’t submit a cover letter along with their resumé. She said, “I will NEVER hire an applicant who doesn’t submit a cover letter.
It’s not that they’re unqualified, but I can’t put the experience on their resumé into context.” Don’t make that mistake. Particularly if your previous work experience doesn’t say a lot about how you’ll be a great fit for the company that you’re applying to. If you truly want an cognitive map psychology, internship, you need a cover letter. Not spending time on your cover letterbecause you assume it’s not going to be readcan be incredibly costly. And not hearing back from a company after you submit your application gets old really quickly. So, what’s the purpose of black cowboys a cover letter anyway? The purpose of a cover letter is 3-fold:
Introduce yourself to a prospective employer. Communicate your interest in a specific position and company. Explain how you’re a well-qualified candidate for the internship position. If done right, your cover letter will serve an actual purpose (beyond checking off an application requirement or turning in a class assignment). Your cover letter can get you an interview. If you’re familiar with how to write a resumé, you know the purpose of a resumé is to communicate your achievements to a potential employer. Unlike a cover letter, a resumé never uses personal pronouns like “I” or “Me”.
Instead of primary secondary tertiary saying, “I created a social media campaign,” a resumé states, “Created social media campaign”. Cowboys! Because of this traditional formatting, it can be difficult for internship applicants to express their personality. “I feel like my resumé makes me sound super boring.” Guess who’s here to how to write, save the day? The misunderstood cover letter. For some reason, cover letters don’t get the love they deserve. But cover letters are actually pretty cool. Black Cowboys! They can help you tell your professional story. Let’s look at an example. Say your resumé includes the following entry:
Volunteer, Community Food Pantry. Inspect and sort 100 pounds of food donations per The Indian, week to ensure they meet quality and safety standards. While that’s a solid resumé bullet point, it doesn’t tell the entire story of black why you chose to volunteer and structures what your experience with the food pantry taught you. The bullet point doesn’t discuss how volunteering changed you as a person, or influenced your professional goals, and black most importantly, it doesn’t discuss how volunteering will help you excel at your internship position. If we assume this volunteer experience is code relevant to the internship you’re applying for, your cover letter provides a great opportunity to tell this story in more detail. Here’s a good example of cowboys what you could write in your cover letter: “Through my volunteer work with the Community Food Pantry, I discovered my passion for nonprofit business. History: The Indian Act Essay! Each week, I collaborate with ten other volunteers to sort food donations. I am dedicated to ending poverty and black cowboys hunger and would be thrilled to intern with the Hunger Relief Organization.” Being able to secondary tertiary, tell your story is what makes a cover letter incredibly valuable. This can set you apart as an applicant and most importantly, help you secure your dream internship or job! Before I explain how to format your cover letter , let’s review the three primary goals : Introduce yourself to a prospective employer.
Communicate your interest in a position and company. Explain how you’re a well-qualified candidate for the position. Let’s look at each goal in more detail. Goal 1: Introduce yourself to a prospective employer. The first goal is pretty straightforward. In your cover letter, you need to black, formally introduce yourself to the hiring team. You can accomplish this in a single, well-crafted sentence. States Case! Below are two good examples: Example 1: “As a sophomore majoring in social work at black cowboys University of cognitive map psychology Southern California, I am passionate about supporting vulnerable individuals and groups.” At a minimum, you should include your year in school (or when you plan to graduate), along with your degree, major, minor, or area of study. Goal 2: Communicate your interest in a position and company.
A second requirement is to communicate your interest in the position and company. Always tailor your cover letter with the exact position title and the name of the company you’re applying to. Here are two great examples: Example 1: “When I discovered the psychology internship with the Counseling Center on Internships.com, I was excited by the opportunity to gain exposure to the field of psychology alongside experienced psychologists and counselors.” After you introduce yourself and communicate your interest in the position and company, there is one additional piece of black information you must include.
Don’t miss this step: Goal 3: Explain how you’re a well-qualified candidate. This is the most common mistake students make. You need to connect the dots for an employer of how your journey and experiences make you the best candidate for the position. Don’t just say, “I’m the History: Removal, best candidate”. Prove it.
Explain what makes you well-qualified. Share the experiences and courses that have prepared you to be an effective, productive, outstanding professional with their company. Let’s look at an example. Say a company is seeking a graphic design intern. Cowboys! In the job description, the Removal Act Essay, company outlines their minimum requirements: an black, intern who understands how to use Adobe Creative Suite, can effectively collaborate with a dynamic team, and understands basic design and marketing principles. Stay away from fancy curls and fonts that only belong on cowboys horror movie posters. Other than this exception, be sure to use the black cowboys, same font throughout for consistency’s sake. Font Size: Use size 10- to 12-point font. This will ensure the font is services of ethics large enough to read, but small enough to create a professional and polished look. Color : Unless you’re a graphic design major or a creative professional, you’ll typically use black font. There is no need to black, indent the first sentence of each paragraph. Instead “Return/Enter” between each paragraph.
This will create a balance of independent skills text and whitespace, making your cover letter easier to read. Bullet Points: Some resumés use a lot of bullet points to outline someone’s accomplishments, but can bullet points be used on a cover letter? Sparingly. Use bullet points to briefly summarize information where appropriate. For example, you may write something like this:
My academic background, communication skills, and leadership experience have prepared me well for this computer science internship. Academic background. Black! I have completed courses in computer science, statistics, and write essay systems programming resulting in a 3.9 Major GPA. Communication skills. Bullet points can be an services code, effective way to communicate multiple qualifications, while abiding by the one-page length requirement. Those are the basic style guidelines when it comes to creating a cover letter. Now let’s check out the key sections of a letter. What are the black, key sections of your cover letter? The following are essential cover letter sections: header, date, greeting, company address, and salutation. I’ll define each section and map psychology discuss exactly what to include. I’ll also share detailed examples of what to write. Header : A cover letter header is the black, information at the top of your cover letter. It includes your name and contact information, the date you’re applying, and the company’s mailing address.
In the header, it’s important to include your full name. If you’re in the process of changing your name, plan to change your name during the recruitment process, or recently changed your name, it may be appropriate to include your new name with your former name in parentheses. If your name is map psychology “Elizabeth” and you go by “Beth,” then it’s entirely acceptable to black cowboys, use Beth on your documents. If your legal name is “Wayne” and human you prefer to go by black cowboys, “Thomas,” then you may write it as “Thomas (Wayne) Johnson” to avoid any confusion. When it comes to contact information, you should include your email address and a phone number where the company can reach you with follow-up questions, or to how to write, schedule an interview.
You may also choose to include a URL link to your LinkedIn profile or an online portfolio showcasing your work. Here’s the black, most important part: You must use a professional email address. Your school email address is a good option. How To Write An Art Essay! If you prefer to use a personal email, make sure it’s professional. While you want to stand out, a creative email address like alliecat@ or iwantajob@ isn’t the black cowboys, way to do it. Create a generic johnsmith1@ account, or use the .edu email address provided by your university.
Unprofessional email addresses get resumés rejected more than 75% of the primary secondary tertiary, time. Date : After you include your name and contact information, you need to include the date you’re applying for the position. Right-align the black cowboys, date in the space below below your name and contact information. Company Address: While you probably won’t snail mail your cover letter, as a professional document, tradition tells us to include the company mailing address. Although you’re not typically submitting a hard copy of your resumé, after sending off your application, it’s in History: The Indian, the possession of cowboys human resources. You don’t know if it will be printed, mailed, sent to another department for review, or any combination of these scenarios. Determine the company name, mailing address, and department (if applicable). Left-align this information after the date. Greeting : The most appropriate option for a greeting is ‘Dear’.
It’s also advantageous to refer to the hiring manager by their name in your salutation. For example, “Dear Ms. Mary Johnson,”. When writing the salutation, ensure the name and title are correct. For example, a person with the name ‘Taylor’, may prefer the independent, title Mr., Ms., Mrs., or none of the above. Make sure you use the correct title before their surname. If you don’t know what to use, opt for black cowboys, their first and write an art last name only. Salutation: Don’t use “To Whom It May Concern”, or “Dear Sir/Madam”. Do your homework and figure out the “Whom” actually entails. Black Cowboys! If you’re lucky, a company will list a contact person near the bottom of the job description.
Use this contact name in how to an art, your cover letter. If the black, company does not specify who the hiring manager or recruiter is, still do not resort to, “To Whom It May Concern”. In this case, here’s what you should do: After thoroughly reviewing the cognitive map psychology, job description, work up the courage to call human resources. HR is black your friend, so there’s no need to be anxious. Here’s what you could say: “Hi, I’m preparing an application for united states brief, your open internship position #12345. I’m wondering who the hiring manager is for black, this position.” Oftentimes, human resources will provide you with the information.
Other times, they may say, “Just address it to HR.” In this case, I recommend using “Dear Hiring Manager and cognitive Search Committee” as your salutation. Now that we’ve covered the basic formatting rules and the core sections of a cover letter, let’s talk about an incredibly important rule for black cowboys, every cover letter you write. Don’t forget this: You must tailor your cover letter to every single position and learning skills unique company you apply to. What does it mean to black, tailor a cover letter? Tailoring a cover letter is exactly what it sounds like.
A tailor, or a person who alters clothing, adjusts clothing to of ethics, fit unique, individual people. Cowboys! A shirt tailored for Person A will not fit Person B as well as it fits Person A. History: The Indian Act Essay! You should take the same approach when writing a cover letter. It’s kind of like giving a birthday gift. While you could safely give any person a gift of black cash, it can come off as impersonal (like you forgot it was even their birthday). Why? Because it’s a generic gift. Just as you would avoid giving a generic gift to your best friend.
You should avoid giving a generic cover letter to your dream employer. In short, you should never submit the exact same cover letter to more than one position or company. Tailoring a cover letter requires additional effort on your behalf. You need to conduct company research and understand the position inside and out. You’ll use this information to create a unique cover letter that is appropriate for a specific job and a unique company. If you’re thinking, “How would one company know if I send them the same exact cover letter I sent another company?”
Truth be told, they probably won’t find out. But that’s not the point. If your cover letter is cognitive map psychology so generic that you can submit it to multiple positions at different companies, it’s not unique enough. The recruiter will immediately recognize your cover letter as a generic template, and it will end up in the trash can. Let’s go back to the birthday gift analogy.
When you purchase a birthday gift for your best friend, you most likely base your decision on a few things: What are they interested in? What do they enjoy? What do they need? What do they want? You then use what you know about your friend to inform your decision of what to buy. It’s the same when it comes to black, writing a cover letter. You must conduct company research to answer similar questions: What type of services code of ethics candidate is the company interested in?
What does the company value and enjoy? What needs and pain points does the company need to solve? What does the company want from you as an applicant? To be successful, you must integrate the answers to cowboys, these questions into your cover letter. Human! While some of the content in each letter will undoubtedly overlap, do your best to create unique content for each position. While the black, term ‘research’ can be intimidating, I have good news:
You don’t have to be a scientist to do good research. To conduct company research, there are a few key resources: Explore the company website. Google the company to discover current events. Visit websites such as Glassdoor.com, where candidates, current employees, and former employees rate companies. Some examples of what you may research are the company mission, vision, or recent news.
You’re looking for information that is relevant to the position and details that make you excited about the company. At this point, you understand what a cover letter is and what it means to tailor your cover letter. This cover letter template is not tailored to any specific company or position. You should make note of the black cowboys, following: Core responsibilities Required qualifications Preferred qualifications Keywords Patterns and themes. A job description will typically label the core responsibilities, required qualifications, and preferred qualifications. Those should be easy to determine. That being said, there won’t be a section labeled “Keywords” or “Themes.” This is where you have to do a little work. It’s your job to read through the job description and determine what is primary secondary most important to the employer. Ask yourself the following questions:
What words are repeated throughout the job description? What responsibilities are emphasized in the job description? Let’s look at the following example of black a job description for a marketing internship. The example outlines responsibilities, minimum qualifications, and cognitive map psychology preferred characteristics. Carefully read through each section.

United States V Nixon! Do you write about all ten? Probably not. If you remember correctly, a cover letter can only be one page long. You cannot adequately cover ten different requirements in a single page. So how do you determine which skills to focus on? This is where step two comes in. Step 2: Select which job responsibilities you want to focus on.
After you review the job description in detail and highlight the most important parts, you need to choose which of the many responsibilities you want to black, focus on in your cover letter. Human! Unless the job description is very shortand the company only highlights three requirementsit’s unlikely you will be able to black cowboys, discuss every single requirement in your cover letter. Cutting out that header and selecting only the write roles that are actually relevant will free up some room on the page. It might seem scary to have tiny margins it#8217;s against everything you learned in school but it actually makes your resume look much more impressive. It may look nice to black have at services code, least three bullet points under each title you#8217;ve held, but it#8217;s not necessary.
If you didn#8217;t have three separate and relevant roles in each position, then you don#8217;t need three bullets. If two of your bullet points are similar, try combining them into black cowboys one line. 14. Learning! Use bullet points that make you stand out. Forget the bullets that everyone in that sort of role performed. Only include ones where you had great results (#8220;Increased ticket sales by 200%#8221;) or the context is black cowboys, impressive (#8220;Worked the door for cognitive map psychology a 500+ person event#8221;). 15.

Leave off irrelevant experience (yes, again!). Seriously. This one is so important, it#8217;s worth repeating. If I#8217;m considering you for an editorial internship, I don#8217;t need to know that you were a member of your school#8217;s ballroom dance club. As I am applying to different jobs and I have heard that most of the time when you write a cover letter, it gets seen by cognitive, the first person to receive your application but then they discard it and just keep the resume, sometime being the black cowboys person who looks at the cover letter will say, #8220;she/he meets the criteria we are looking for based our advertisement#8221; then hands it to the person without the cover letter who actually does the how to essay hiring.
I am trying to get used to the different ways to present a resume at this moment being originally from australia where some things in terms of the cowboys application process differs. Thoughts or advice? Thank you. Hi Johanna! That#8217;s a great question. Unfortunately, the short answer is cognitive map psychology, that it#8217;s different for every company. Some recruiters love to read cover letters, others never read them. I would say that if you#8217;re trying to make your resume fit on cowboys, one page and have to make a choice between including really great work experience and including an objective/summary, go with the experience. It will show why you#8217;re right for the job better than a brief summary. Again, that#8217;s a personal opinion and cognitive everyone will have a different view on black, the matter. But go with your gut and include what you think shows that you#8217;re the code of ethics best candidate!

Essay writing in History is particularly aimed at helping you progressively develop your skills in research, analysing different forms of source material, using different kinds of black cowboys, evidence, and writing strong, critical and clear arguments.
In most History subjects, you will be asked to produce different kinds of writing. Short tutorial and document exercises usually address specific skills or tasks (locating sources, analysing a documents point of view, or assessing how particular images or words help us understand historical context, for History: Removal Act Essay instance), while examinations assess your knowledge of the content covered in particular subjects. Essays provide you with an opportunity to explore a particular issue or theme in more depth. In general, the functions of an essay are: to introduce an argument, or contention, based upon the question or problem you choose to tackle; to develop and defend that argument or contention by discussing and black cowboys analysing a range of appropriate evidence, and by critically assessing the interpretations of other historians; and to propose conclusions. The best essays have a clear line of argument, and they present a thesis. In other words, they state a position, defend that position, and arrive at strong, clear conclusions.
They have a well-defined introduction which identifies the central problem or issue and introduces the argument, a body which logically develops the argument point-by-point, and a conclusion which sums up the argument. The desired outcomes of essays in second-year subjects include developing skills in how to write essay the use of bibliographies and black cowboys other reference material, critical reading, putting more independent thought and reflection into essays; greater understanding of documentary criticism and map psychology interpretation, and the critical analysis of secondary interpretations by other historians. Do not assume that you should target your arguments for particular lecturers or tutors.
For a start, your predictions may be inaccurate. Cognitive Map Psychology? Moreover, arguing what you think you ought to black, argue is a lot more complicated and a lot less interesting than arguing what you come to believe as you gather information, review different interpretations, and form your own perspectives on an issue or problem. Any teacher can tell you that some of the best essays they read develop arguments they don’t agree with at all, or arguments which challenge their own interpretations. Writing is easier if you imagine an audience: a person you want to convince of something, a person who wants to know about your ideas and perspectives. Your task, however, is not to united states v nixon case, tell your audience what they think, but to tell your audience what you think, and give them reasons and evidence which show why your conclusions are significant, interesting and convincing.
3. Black? Choosing and comprehending the question or topic. Choose a topic or question you find interesting and challenging: it is History: Removal, easier and much more enjoyable to develop and defend a strong argument on something which interests and cowboys intrigues you than on something you find boring or simple. Writing is not the outcome or the finished product of learning: it is a vital part of learning. It is a way of united states v nixon case brief, sorting out and clarifying your interpretations, trying out black cowboys your ideas, and discovering new ways of how to, thinking about an issue. Think about the question or topic in these ways: what is the problem it suggests? what is the cowboys ‘angle’, the issue, which makes it interesting? what is my first reaction to the question: yes, no, maybe? do I agree or disagree with the contention or interpretation the topic suggests? what ideas and History: The Indian issues can I explore by answering this question? is black, there a simple answer, or might it be more complex than it looks? what kinds of independent learning skills, information is the question asking me to use? what themes can I explore? It is also important to look at the question and ask yourself: do I understand what the question or topic is asking me to do? Have I interpreted the question correctly?
If you are not sure, or if you want to black, check that the how to approach you are taking does address the question, talk to cowboys, your tutor. Essay topics are designed to draw on the subject content developed in lectures and tutorials, and on reading you have completed. Reading the works of other historians, such as those suggested in reading lists, will help you see how others have approached that problem or issue. Historians often disagree on the importance or the united v nixon case brief meaning of black, events of Removal, evidence, or use different kinds of evidence to challenge and amend prior interpretations. They will take different approaches to the same question, and suggest different ways of examining an issue, be it gender relations in black medieval Europe or the reasons for History: The Indian the collapse of the Soviet Union or the impact of colonial rule in India. What you will see, however, is that all of these writers state a position. Cowboys? They address a problem.
They answer a real or implied question. You should trace their strategies for learning skills developing arguments and drawing conclusions. As you do your introductory reading, review your lecture notes, and read more widely, think about your point of view, your own position in relation to other writers, and your own response to a problem. Examine and black evaluate the evidence: what conclusions can you draw? Which interpretations do you think best fit the available evidence? Your interpretations and conclusions do not have to be new to independent learning, be original, challenging, and convincing. You should argue the case which you think emerges most clearly from the evidence and from your critical review of other historians work.
You’ve read the books and articles recommended in the handbook or by your tutor. You’ve come up with some ideas about how you might approach the question, and black cowboys you’ve got a pretty good idea about how other historians have interpreted the united v nixon case brief issues and addressed the cowboys topic. You’ve collected some evidence from a range of different sources and you’ve tried mapping out some preliminary ideas and arguments on paper. You’ve looked again at the major themes of the subject and thought about how you might address them in this essay. In order to plan your essay, you now need to come up with an argument, a point of view which will guide your writing towards a conclusion. Would you agree with the argument that respect for the natural environment is a recent discovery for residents of Mars? Having read a variety of sources, you should be able to state your thesis (your answer) in a sentence or two. Yes, because prior to the environmental movements of the 1960s, the majority of Martians were more interested in map psychology exploiting than respecting the cowboys natural environment. No, because Martians have persistently respected their version of the natural environment, because natural environments are always viewed in a romanticised and idealised form.
No, it is difficult to draw a simple, general conclusion on this issue, as the evidence suggests that different groups of Martians have interpreted and viewed the History: Act Essay environment very differently over time, and no clear trend is visible even now. When you begin planning your essay, you should always be able to state your thesis in a fairly straightforward way, based on black cowboys, your initial reading and research for the topic. This sentence or two states your case. Broadly, your essay is the exposition and defence of secondary structures, that case: it shows the reader how, and why, you have arrived at those conclusions. To write a good essay, you must first decide what your central argument is cowboys, going to be, and then plan your essay to develop that argument. Of course, as you write your first draft, you may find that the argument changes and develops in a direction you did not anticipate. Few writers are completely sure of their final conclusions before they begin drafting: the task of writing down and defending the argument often reveals unanticipated problems, or challenges and The Indian Removal changes your first thoughts, or leads you toward one interpretation more than another. Often, too, you might need to go back to your sources, read through some of your notes, or do some further reading to clarify and expand an emerging point. However, the basic thrust and content of cowboys, your argument or thesis should be clear enough to allow you to states v nixon, plan the black cowboys stages of your argument before you begin drafting. Perhaps the single best way of how to write, ensuring a successful essay is having a good plan . The plan should lay out your argument, for instance in black point form, and you can also use it to indicate where you will use certain items of evidence and supporting arguments.
introduction: state the human services of ethics case for black cowboys no: Martians have persistently respected their version of the natural environment, because natural environments are always viewed in a romanticised and idealised form explain the thrust of the of ethics argument : dispute recent discovery, my essay focuses on cowboys, previous century to show that respect for environment is an art essay, always based on historically variable assumptions and preconceptions about beauty, usefulness and cowboys worth of nature explain idealisation/romanticisation of the natural environment (summarise Smith’s theory of map psychology, idealisation, discuss paintings, use examples from Connor and black Jones) list and give examples of human code, different idealisations of natural environment in the nineteenth century and show different assumptions about beauty and usefulness behind each one (use examples from Green and Brown) show how these different ideals were sometimes contradictory or came into conflict (use example of forestry in Mars Forest) case study: the Martian garden legend (discuss the cowboys garden stories); argue that an environment under exploitation also increasingly romanticised (review the different interpretations of Green and Red, show why I think Green fits better with the evidence) summarise above points about united v nixon, previous century; what is respected in the recent past: argue that this is another idealisation (evidence: Martian tourist brochures); conclusion: restate the case , and argue that understanding respect for natural environment always means analysing the idealisation of natural environments. In the black cowboys short essays common in first year, your plan is likely to be less complex, and may only have four or five main points. United V Nixon Brief? As you progress into black cowboys second and third year, you are expected to develop more sophisticated arguments, which makes good planning even more important. 6a. Introducing and developing the argument. In your introduction , you should state your case and, as in tertiary the example above, set out the basic structure of your argument . You might also briefly summarise two or three of your main points. Cowboys? If you have decided to History: The Indian Removal, adopt a particular focus (for instance, using case studies from a particular time or place, or narrowing the black topic to case, concentrate on a particular theme), you should explain this in the introduction as well. Developing the argument : The example above shows how an argument is then developed towards its conclusion.
Basically, each stage of your argument should be developed and defended in turn, by showing your interpretation of the appropriate evidence, by critically reviewing the work of other historians, and by using example, case study and explanation. Black? A good way of thinking about this is to imagine that you are building your argument in independent blocks . Each paragraph is a block which builds your argument towards a conclusion. Each block is introduced and black cowboys described, and then its place in case brief the whole structure is shown. Block 1: stage of the argument. On Mars in the 1850s, the beauty of nature was usually associated with wild, untouched landscapes. Black Cowboys? Painters rarely drew human figures.
If there were humans, nature towered over them, as in Rembrandt’s Martian Mountains. Structures? In her book Environmental Perception on Mars, Joan Brown argues that painters in the 1850s focused on how nature was being conquered. Black? However, Ash clearly shows that mid-nineteenth-century Martians usually depicted an idealised nature which was to be protected from the threats posed by civilisation. Block 2: next stage of the argument. The most crucial changes occurred after the Martian titanium rushes of the 1870s showed the potentially lucrative returns of mineral exploration and exploitation.
Certainly, by the 1880s, most representations of the natural environment showed nature being tamed and civilised. Human Services Code Of Ethics? Even mining sites appeared in nature paintings, and the work of Joseph Smith is a good example of how even the most intensive forms of black, exploitation were represented as beneficial intrusion for the landscape. Block 3: brief summary, and introducing the next stage of the argument. By the 1880s, therefore, the idealised untouched nature of the 1850s had been invaded by united states v nixon brief humans, and an ideal natural landscape was now represented as one which was productive and cowboys bountiful. Humans did not threaten nature; they unleashed its potential. It was important for skills Martians, Smith argued in 1883, to feel relaxed and black cowboys comfortable about the past and future of the Martian environment. Yet representations of an ideal environment as one conquered and populated by humans never completely replaced the older tradition of mourning the degradation of another form of independent learning skills, ideal environment, the Martian garden. This alternative version became popular again in black the 1890s.
The body of your essay, therefore, uses evidence, examples and explanation to develop your case point by point. Each paragraph has a point to make, and occasional summary sentences guide the reader through the argument. 6b. States V Nixon Case Brief? Using different kinds of evidence. In developing your case, you will need to make decisions about the kinds of sources you will refer to, and the best ways to use them.
Sources can generally be defined into two broad types: primary or documentary sources (usually written at the time by an eyewitness, direct participant or close observer) secondary or scholarly sources (usually interpretations and explanations written after the fact by someone analysing the primary or documentary sources) For example, a book containing the collected speeches of Charles de Gaulle is black cowboys, a primary source; an analysis of them by a political scientist or historian is a secondary source. An article in the Age of 30 June 1900 about the bubonic plague epidemic which affected Sydney during that year is a primary source; an article in the Age on an art, 30 June 1990 discussing the impact of the cowboys epidemic on public health policy in Australia is a secondary source. Broadly, the primary or documentary sources are the raw material used by historians , the subject of History: The Indian Act Essay, your argument, while the secondary or scholarly sources provide examples of how others have analysed and interpreted the black cowboys problem or issue at hand. The distinction is not hard and fast, and there will always be exceptions. For instance, if you are writing an essay about historians’ representations of race in Britain, the secondary sources of the historians are in fact your primary documentary source. In most essays, you will be expected to critically analyse the interpretations of other historians in this way. In any event, these different types of sources should both be read critically: analysed for their point of view, for the assumptions, ideas and understandings which inform them, and for the strategies writers use to advance their arguments. Don’t take anything on trust: be a critical reader of all kinds of sources and texts , and use your critical analysis of both primary and secondary sources in case brief your essay. You also need to make decisions about how to use evidence: in the form of quotation, or in the form of summarising. It is best to use quotation strategically and sparingly : quote phrases or passages which best illustrate the point you are trying to make, or which really help you give your reader the flavour of the evidence you are using.
If you use a quotation, make sure it fits with the stage of the argument you are advancing. Refer to the language, analyse the cowboys assumptions or strategies it reveals. In other words, use quotation when the actual words are the single best way of providing the evidence and developing your case. Skills? If the quotation is less than about thirty words, combine it with your text, as in this example where I am quoting the following phrase which is not very long. “You must always use quotation marks to indicate the separation between your words and black cowboys the words of someone else.” If it is longer than this, you should separate it from the text, and indent it: This is an example of a much longer quote. It contains a few sentences, and needs to be distinguished from the body of the essay. When you are indenting a quote like this, note that you do not have to use quotation marks; as it is already separated, there is no need to indicate that by the use of such symbols. In general, use very little quotation from secondary or scholarly sources. It is better to say what you mean in your own words, quoting another historian or interpreter only where the independent learning skills phrase is particularly wonderful or where you need to show precisely how that writer made their point in black order to criticise, defend or develop it. In all other cases, it is best to summarise.
Write reflective summaries of what others have written, relating those interpretations to primary tertiary structures, your argument. You might find that the example paragraphs on the previous page gives you a more concrete idea of how a writer can use a mix of black cowboys, summary and direct quotation from different kinds of code, sources to develop their argument. In your conclusion, you should restate your case strongly and clearly by summarising your main points. Black Cowboys? It is also possible to secondary tertiary, raise issues and problems in your conclusion, especially broader questions which are beyond the scope of cowboys, your essay. You might reflect on what your interpretation implies for contemporary debates or discussions, write briefly about the broader implications of secondary tertiary, your position, or consider what your interpretations tells us about the role and black cowboys nature of history itself.
Use your conclusion to argue for map psychology the significance of your argument and your interpretation. Be careful, though: a poorly developed argument followed by sweeping speculations on black cowboys, the nature of the universe or the human condition is united v nixon case brief, unlikely to black cowboys, be either effective or convincing. Again, as you develop your skills in formulating, developing and defending arguments, you will also develop your ability to write more reflectively and to use essays to open up these kinds of primary secondary structures, complex questions. 7. Writing clearly and effectively. The best single rule is to always use clear expression: write simply and cowboys with clarity and avoid complex sentence constructions . Use definite, specific and concrete language. Don’t use unnecessary words, and make sure you understand the words you are using.
Writing problems often occur when people try to use very complex language and write an art syntax. A better idea is to establish a simple and clear style first, and then gradually develop more complex sentence forms and means of expression. As you develop your writing skills, vary your sentence structures and lengths to add variety. Short sentences often add emphasis to a particularly important point. Spelling, punctuation and grammatical errors detract from an black argument, whatever its quality: careful editing of independent, your draft is cowboys, very important. It is also important to use accurate language, which is v nixon case, one good reason for using non-discriminatory language. For instance, the statement that men adapted themselves to these new conditions should lead any critical reader to ask what women were doing at that time. It is a reasonable and accepted convention that all forms of public communication, including journalism, business language and academic writing, should use non-discriminatory language. There are at least five effective ways of improving your writing. Always read your own work.
what is my main idea, my contention, my argument? am I getting it across to the reader? Take responsibility for critically assessing your own writing . Look at the comments made on your previous essays, and work out whether this one repeats the strengths and overcomes the weaknesses of your previous work. Black? If you need to, speak to the person who assessed your work, and tertiary ask them for more guidance. Reading other writers. As you read, evaluate the styles of different writers. Black Cowboys? What makes them more or less effective? What is most important to you as a reader, and what makes good writers better to read? Practice. Like any other set of skills, writing improves with practice and with constructive assessment, by yourself and by human code others. Read your own work out black cowboys loud . You do not need to comprehend the rules of grammar or the intricacies of syntax to cognitive map psychology, know when something sounds clumsy, or when a sentence needs punctuation, or when a long paragraph has completely lost its drift. Reading your draft out loud is black, also a good way to cognitive map psychology, add variety and oomph to black, your language.
If its boring you to independent learning skills, tears, or if you have no idea what it means, it might be time for redrafting. Let other people read what you write . It is particularly good to give your essay to someone who is not an expert in the area you are writing about. Black? If it doesn’t make sense to them, your argument might need clarification. If they struggle to read it, you might need to edit more carefully. University teachers will not usually be able to read drafts of students work, but there are plenty of other people who can give you feedback.
Swap essays with fellow students. Get the people you live with to an art, read them. Distribute them on buses. 8. Referencing Instructions for Essays. Decisions about when to cite sources can be difficult. Effective referencing is another writing skill your university work aims to develop. The reader should, in theory, be able to retrace your steps in gathering evidence for your argument. In other words, you provide citations as a kind of road map that shows readers how you came to these conclusions, shows readers where you derived your information and, if relevant, shows readers where you derived the ideas or interpretations that you are paraphrasing, adopting or challenging. Therefore, you need to provide citations in the following instances: where you directly quote someone else’s words; where you are directly summarising someone else’s argument and black cowboys ideas; where you are summarising arguments and ideas derived from The Indian Act Essay a number of sources; to cowboys, point your readers to the source of independent skills, information; to translate words or phrase in a foreign language that a reader cannot reasonably be presumed to understand. In general, you need to provide sources for statements that are problematic or debatable in the context of your argument, or that a reasonably well-informed person would not be expected to know.
Again, the ability to successfully make these judgements is a skill you will develop with practice and experience. If you offer a translation of cowboys, a word or phrase in a foreign language, the basis of your decision should be whether a reader could reasonably be presumed to know the meaning of the History: phrase or word already. There is no need to translate coup d’etat or Sultan or Blitzkrieg, for instance. The use of cowboys, citation to refer readers to Removal, the work of cowboys, other writers is primary secondary structures, occasionally useful, but for cowboys the most part, your citations refer only to books, articles and other material you have used directly. Only cite information that you have actually looked at essay, yourself, or: always SIGHT what you CITE . It is fine to black cowboys, use a second-hand reference (like a quotation or a summary in a book from a source to which you do not have access), but you should indicate that in your citation. Map Psychology? An example of how to do this is provided in black cowboys the next section. You can also use citations to clarify specific points, or add a small amount of additional information or supporting evidence. You should not use footnotes or endnotes as a sort of second argument, nor to provide paragraph after paragraph of new information. If it is not important enough to put into the body of the essay, then leave it out.
8b. An Art Essay? Numbering and placement of footnote and endnote numbers. When providing footnotes or endnotes, number notes consecutively throughout the text. Put these numbers at the end of sentences, if at all possible, and black cowboys distinguish them from the text either by superscripting (raising above the line) or placing them in how to write an art brackets. Cowboys? If you use material from primary structures two different sources in the same sentence, it is often possible to combine the two citations in one footnote, using a semi-colon to separate them. Usually, you will refer to information or material at particular places in a larger work so you will need to show the page (p.) or pages (pp.) on which the material is located. This text produces the following footnotes: On Mars in the 1850s, the ‘beauty’ of cowboys, nature was usually associated with wild, untouched landscapes. Painters rarely drew human figures. If there were humans, nature towered over them, as in of ethics Rembrandt’s ‘Martian Mountains’.
1 In her book Environmental Perception on black cowboys, Mars , Joan Brown argues that “painters in the 1850s focused on how nature was being conquered”. 2 However, Ash clearly shows that mid-nineteenth-century Martians respected an idealised nature which was to be kept separate from civilisation. 3. 1 K. Float (ed.), The Magical World of Ken Rembrandt , New York, 1965, p. 68. 2 Joan Brown, Environmental Perception on Mars , Sydney, 1995, p. 13. 3 Ann Ash, Joan Brown is Wrong , Sydney, 1996, pp. 1-23. 8c. Citing different kinds of sources. The following rules should help you through most situations.
The absolute rule is to be consistent. History: The Indian Removal? Inconsistency drives readers crazy, and is not a good tactic when you are attempting to convince those readers of the accuracy of your interpretations and arguments. For the citation, you need to give your reader enough information so that they can easily locate your source: in this case, the full web site information. You also need to cowboys, tell your reader when you accessed the page: because web pages are updated, the information may have changed location or been removed.
