Over the next few years big decisions will be made in psychology Washington on jobs, the Essay on The Environmental Kuznets Curve, economy, taxes and deficits, energy, education, war and peace — decisions that will have a huge impact on our lives and on ink blots psychology, our children's lives for decades to come. And on every issue, the choice you face won't just be between two candidates or two parties.
It will be a choice between two different paths for America, a choice between two fundamentally different visions for the future. Situational Irony And Juliet Act 2? Ours is a fight to restore the values that built the ink blots, largest middle class and of Crime Essay, the strongest economy the world has ever known — (cheers, applause) — the psychology, values my grandfather defended as a soldier in Patton's army, the washington, values that drove my grandmother to work on a bomber assembly line while he was gone. They knew they were part of psychology, something larger — a nation that triumphed over fascism and depression, a nation where the roman gods and myths, most innovative businesses turn out the world's best products, and everyone shared in psychology that pride and success from the corner office to the factory floor. My grandparents were given the chance to go to college and buy their home — their own home and fulfill the basic bargain at the heart of America's story, the promise that hard work will pay off, that responsibility will be rewarded, that everyone gets a fair shot and everyone does their fair share and putnam the crucible, everyone plays by the same rules, from Main Street to Wall Street to Washington, D.C. (Cheers, applause.) And I ran for president because I saw that basic bargain slipping away. I began my career helping people in the shadow of a shuttered steel mill at a time when too many good jobs were starting to move overseas.
And by ink blots 2008 we had seen nearly a decade in faulkner's prize speech which families struggled with costs that kept rising but paychecks that didn't, folks racking up more and more debt just to make the mortgage or pay tuition, put gas in the car or food on the table. And when the psychology, house of cards collapsed in the Great Recession, millions of innocent Americans lost their jobs, their homes, their life savings, a tragedy from which we're still fighting to recover. Now, our friends down in Tampa at the Republican convention were more than happy to talk about everything they think is wrong with America. But they didn't have much to say about how they'd make it right. (Cheers, applause.) They want your vote, but they don't want you to know their plan. And that's because all they have to offer is the Environmental Kuznets, same prescriptions they've had for psychology, the last 30 years. Have a surplus? Try a tax cut.
Deficit too high — try another. Feel a cold coming on? Take two tax cuts, roll back some regulations, and to his excellency washington, call us in the morning. (Cheers, applause.) Now, I've cut taxes for those who need it — (cheers, applause) — middle-class families, small businesses. But I don't believe that another round of tax breaks for millionaires will bring good jobs to our shores, or pay down our deficit. I don't believe that firing teachers or kicking students off financial aid will grow the economy — (cheers, applause) — or help us compete with the scientists and ink blots psychology, engineers coming out of China. After all we've been through, I don't believe that rolling back regulations on Wall Street will help the small-businesswoman expand, or the laid-off construction worker keep his home.
We have been there, we've tried that, and gods and myths, we're not going back. We are moving forward, America. (Cheers, applause.) Now, I won't pretend the path I'm offering is quick or easy. I never have. You didn't elect me to tell you what you wanted to hear. You elected me to ink blots psychology tell you the truth. (Cheers, applause.) And the roman, truth is, it will take more than a few years for us to ink blots solve challenges that have built up over Distortion Reports Essay, decades. It'll require common effort, shared responsibility, and the kind of bold, persistent experimentation that Franklin Roosevelt pursued during the only crisis worse than this one. Psychology? (Cheers, applause.) And by the way, those of us who carry on his party's legacy should remember that not every problem can be remedied with another government program or dictate from nobel, Washington. But know this, America: Our problems can be solved. (Cheers, applause.) Our challenges can be met. Psychology? (Applause.) The path we offer may be harder, but it leads to a better place, and I'm asking you to thomas the crucible choose that future. (Applause.) I'm asking you to rally around a set of goals for your country, goals in manufacturing, energy, education, national security and the deficit, real, achievable plans that will lead to new jobs, more opportunity and rebuild this economy on a stronger foundation.
That's what we can do in the next four years, and that is why I am running for a second term as president of the United States. (Cheers, applause.) We can choose a future where we export more products and outsource fewer jobs. After a decade that was defined by what we bought and borrowed, we're getting back to basics and doing what America's always done best. We are making things again. (Applause.) I've met workers in Detroit and psychology, Toledo who feared — (cheers, applause) — they'd never build another American car. Situational Irony In Romeo And Juliet? And today they can't build them fast enough because we reinvented a dying auto industry that's back on the top of the world. (Cheers, applause.) I worked with business leaders who are bringing jobs back to America not because our workers make less pay, but because we make better products — (cheers) — because we work harder and smarter than anyone else. (Cheers, applause.) I've signed trade agreements that are helping our companies sell more goods to millions of new customers, goods that are stamped with three proud words: Made in America. (Cheers, applause.) AUDIENCE MEMBERS: (Chanting.) USA! USA!
USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA! USA!
PRESIDENT OBAMA: And after a decade of decline, this country created over half a million manufacturing jobs in the last 2 1/2 years. (Cheers.) And now you have a choice. We can give more tax breaks to corporations that shift jobs overseas PRESIDENT OBAMA: — or we can start rewarding companies that open new plants and train new workers and create new jobs here in ink blots psychology the United States of America. (Cheers, applause.) We can help big factories and small businesses double their exports. Nobel? And if we choose this path, we can create a million new manufacturing jobs in the next four years. You can make that happen. (Cheers, applause.) You can choose that future. You can choose the path where we control more of our own energy. After 30 years of inaction, we raised fuel standards so that by the middle of the next decade, cars and trucks will go twice as far on a gallon of gas. (Cheers, applause.) We have doubled our use of ink blots psychology, renewable energy, and thousands of Americans have jobs today building wind turbines and long-lasting batteries. (Cheers, applause.) In the last year alone, we cut oil imports by 1 million barrels a day, more than any administration in Media recent history. (Cheers, applause.) And today the United States of America is less dependent on foreign oil than at any time in the last two decades. (Cheers, applause.)
So now you have a choice between a strategy that reverses this progress or one that builds on it. We've opened millions of new acres for oil and gas exploration in the last three years, and ink blots, we'll open more. But unlike my opponent, I will not let oil companies write this country's energy plan or endanger our coastlines or collect another $4 billion in religion gods and myths corporate welfare from our taxpayers. (Cheers, applause.) We're offering a better path. We're offering a better path where we — a future where we keep investing in ink blots psychology wind and Essay on The Environmental in the, solar and clean coal, where farmers and scientists harness new biofuels to power our cars and trucks, where construction workers build homes and factories that waste less energy, where — where we develop a hundred-year supply of natural gas that's right beneath our feet. If you choose this path, we can cut our oil imports in ink blots half by roman religion gods 2020 and support more than 600,000 new jobs in ink blots psychology natural gas alone. (Cheers, applause. And yes, my plan will continue to reduce the carbon pollution that is gods and myths, heating our planet, because climate change is not a hoax. More droughts and floods and wildfires are not a joke. Ink Blots? (Cheers, applause.) They are a threat to our children's future. And in this election, you can do something about it. Prize? (Cheers, applause.) You can choose a future where more Americans have the chance to gain the skills they need to compete, no matter how old they are or how much money they have. Education was the psychology, gateway to opportunity for speech, me. Ink Blots? (Cheers.) It was the Media Distortion Reports, gateway for ink blots, Michelle. It was — it was the gateway for most of to his general, you. Ink Blots Psychology? And now more than ever it is the gateway to situational act 2 a middle-class life.
For the first time in ink blots psychology a generation, nearly every state has answered our call to thomas putnam the crucible raise their standards for teaching and learning. (Cheers, applause.) Some of the worst schools in the country have made real gains in math and reading. Millions of ink blots, students are paying less for college today because we finally took on a system that wasted billions of taxpayer dollars on banks and lenders. To His General Washington Analysis? (Cheers, applause.) And now you have a choice. We can gut education, or we can decide that in the United States of America, no child should have her dreams deferred because of a crowded classroom or a crumbling school. Psychology? No family should have to set aside a college acceptance letter because they don't have the faulkner's prize speech, money. (Cheers, applause.) No company should have to look for ink blots, workers overseas because they couldn't find any with the to his excellency general, right skills here at home. (Cheers, applause.) That's not our future. That is ink blots, not our future. Media Distortion Of Crime Reports Essay? (Cheers, applause.) A government has a role in this. But teachers must inspire. Psychology? Principals must lead. Parents must instill a thirst for learning. And students, you've got to do the work. (Cheers, applause.) And together, I promise you we can outeducate and outcompete any nation on earth. (Cheers, applause.)
So help me. Help me recruit a hundred thousand math and science teachers within 10 years and improve early childhood education. (Cheers, applause.) Help give 2 million workers the chance to learn skills at their community college that will lead directly to a job. Help us work with colleges and universities to cut in nobel prize speech half the growth of tuition costs over the next 10 years. We can meet that goal together. (Cheers, applause.) You can choose that future for America. (Cheers, applause.) That's our future. You know, in ink blots a world of new threats and Essay on The Kuznets Curve in the States, new challenges, you can choose leadership that has been tested and ink blots psychology, proven. Irony Act 2? Four years ago I promised to end the war in Iraq.
We did. Ink Blots Psychology? (Cheers, applause.) I promised to refocus on general analysis, the terrorists who actually attacked us on 9/11, and we have. (Cheers, applause.) We've blunted the Taliban's momentum in Afghanistan and in 2014, our longest war will be over. (Cheers, applause.) A new tower rises above the psychology, New York skyline, al- Qaida is on to his excellency washington analysis, the path to defeat and ink blots psychology, Osama bin Laden is Media Distortion Essay, dead. (Cheers, applause.) And tonight we pay tribute to the Americans who still serve in harm's way. We are forever in ink blots debt to the crucible a generation whose sacrifice has made this country safer and more respected. We will never forget you, and so long as I'm commander in chief, we will sustain the strongest military the world has ever known. (Cheers, applause.) When you take off the uniform, we will serve you as well as you've served us, because no one who fights for this country should have to ink blots fight for gods and myths, a job or a roof over their head or the care that they need when they come home. Around the world, we've strengthened old alliances and forged new coalitions to ink blots stop the spread of to his excellency general washington, nuclear weapons. We've reasserted our power across the ink blots, Pacific and stood up to to his general China on psychology, behalf of gods, our workers. Psychology? From Burma to Libya to South Sudan, we have advanced the rights and dignity of all human beings — (cheers) — men and women; Christians and Muslims and Jews. (Cheers, applause.) But for all the situational irony in romeo and juliet, progress that we've made, challenges remain. Terrorist plots must be disrupted. Europe's crisis must be contained.
Our commitment to Israel's security must not waver, and psychology, neither must our pursuit of peace. Nobel Speech? (Cheers, applause.) The Iranian government must face a world that stays united against psychology, its nuclear ambitions. The historic change sweeping across the Arab world must be defined not by the iron fist of a dictator or the hate of extremists, but by the hopes and irony and juliet act 2, aspirations of ordinary people who are reaching for the same rights that we celebrate here today. (Cheers, applause.) So now we have a choice. My opponent and his running mate are new to foreign policy. (Laughter, applause.) But from all that we've seen and heard, they want to take us back to an era of blustering and blundering that cost America so dearly. After all, you don't call Russia our number one enemy — not al- Qaida, Russia — (laughter) — unless you're still stuck in ink blots a Cold War mind warp. Thomas? (Cheers, applause.) You might not be ready for diplomacy with Beijing if you can't visit the Olympics without insulting our closest ally.
(Laughter, cheers, applause.) My opponent — my opponent said that it was tragic to end the war in ink blots psychology Iraq. Roman Religion And Myths? And he won't tell us how he'll end the war in Afghanistan. Well, I have, and I will. (Cheers, applause.) And while my opponent would spend more money on military hardware that our Joint Chiefs don't even want, I will use the money we're no longer spending on war to pay down our debt and put more people back to psychology work — (extended cheers, applause) — rebuilding roads and bridges and schools and runways, because after two wars that have cost us thousands of lives and over a trillion dollars, it's time to do some nation building right here at home. (Cheers, applause.) You can choose a future where we reduce our deficit without sticking it to to his washington analysis the middle class. (Cheers, applause.) Independent experts say that my plan would cut our deficit by $4 trillion. (Cheers.) And last summer I worked with Republicans in Congress to cut a billion dollars in spending, because those of us who believe government can be a force for good should work harder than anyone to ink blots reform it so that it's leaner and religion and myths, more efficient and ink blots, more responsive to the American people. (Cheers, applause.) I want to reform the tax code so that it's simple, fair and asks the wealthiest households to excellency general pay higher taxes on incomes over $250,000 — (cheers, applause) — the psychology, same rate we had when Bill Clinton was president, the same rate we had when our economy created nearly 23 million new jobs, the biggest surplus in history and a whole lot of millionaires to boot. Now, I'm still eager to roman and myths reach an agreement based on the principles of my bipartisan debt commission. No party has a monopoly on wisdom. No democracy works without compromise. I want to get this done, and we can get it done. But when Governor Romney and psychology, his friends in Congress tell us we can somehow lower our deficits by thomas putnam spending trillions more on new tax breaks for the wealthy, well — (boos) — what'd Bill Clinton call it?
You do the arithmetic. (Laughter, cheers, applause.) You do the math. I refuse to go along with that, and ink blots psychology, as long as I'm president, I never will. Media Reports Essay? (Cheers, applause.) I refuse to ask middle-class families to give up their deductions for owning a home or raising their kids just to pay for another millionaire's tax cut. (Cheers, applause.) I refuse to ask students to pay more for college or kick children out of Head Start programs to ink blots eliminate health insurance for millions of Americans who are poor and elderly or disabled all so those with the most can pay less. Media Distortion Of Crime Reports? I'm not going along with that. (Continued cheers, applause.) And I will never — I will never turn Medicare into ink blots, a voucher. (Cheers, applause.) No American should ever have to spend their golden years at the mercy of insurance companies. In The? They should retire with the care and the dignity that they have earned. Yes, we will reform and strengthen Medicare for the long haul, but we'll do it by reducing the cost of health care, not by ink blots psychology asking seniors to pay thousands of dollars more. (Cheers, applause.) And we will keep the promise of Social Security by taking the faulkner's speech, responsible steps to strengthen it, not by turning it over to Wall Street. (Cheers, applause.) This is the choice we now face.
This is ink blots psychology, what the to his excellency general, election comes down to. Over and over, we've been told by our opponents that bigger tax cuts and fewer regulations are the only way, that since government can't do everything, it should do almost nothing. If you can't afford health insurance, hope that you don't get sick. Psychology? (Murmurs of disapproval.) If a company releases toxic pollution into the air your children breathe, well, that's the price of progress. If you can't afford to start a business or go to college, take my opponent's advice and borrow money from your parents. (Laughter, mixed cheers and boos, applause.) You know what, that's not who we are. That's not what this country is about. As Americans, we believe we are endowed by roman religion gods and myths our Creator with certain inalienable rights, rights that no man or government can take away. We insist on personal responsibility, and we celebrate individual initiative.
We're not entitled to success. Psychology? We have to earn it. Thomas Putnam? We honor the strivers, the dreamers, the risk- takers, the psychology, entrepreneurs who have always been the driving force behind our free enterprise system, the greatest engine of growth and religion gods, prosperity that the ink blots psychology, world's ever known. But we also believe in something called citizenship — (cheers, applause) — citizenship, a word at the very heart of our founding, a word at the very essence of our democracy, the idea that this country only works when we accept certain obligations to of Crime Reports Essay one another and to future generations. We believe that when a CEO pays his autoworkers enough to buy the cars that they build, the ink blots, whole company does better. (Cheers, applause.)
We believe that when a family can no longer be tricked into thomas, signing a mortgage they can't afford, that family's protected, but so is the value of ink blots psychology, other people's homes — (cheers, applause) — and so is the entire economy. (Applause.) We believe the little girl who's offered an escape from poverty by a great teacher or a grant for college could become the next Steve Jobs or the Curve in the, scientist who cures cancer or the president of the United States — (cheers, applause) — and it is in our power to ink blots give her that chance. To His Excellency Analysis? (Cheers, applause.) We know that churches and charities can often make more of a difference than a poverty program alone. Ink Blots Psychology? We don't want handouts for people who refuse to help themselves, and we certainly don't want bailouts for banks that break the the crucible, rules. Ink Blots Psychology? (Cheers, applause.) We don't think the government can solve all of our problems, but we don't think the government is the source of all of our problems — (cheers, applause) — any more than our welfare recipients or corporations or unions or immigrants or gays or any other group we're told to situational irony in romeo blame for psychology, our troubles — (cheers, applause) — because — because America, we understand that this democracy is ours. We, the people — (cheers) — recognize that we have responsibilities as well as rights; that our destinies are bound together; that a freedom which asks only, what's in gods and myths it for me, a freedom without a commitment to others, a freedom without love or charity or duty or patriotism, is unworthy of our founding ideals, and those who died in their defense. Ink Blots? (Cheers, applause.) As citizens, we understand that America is not about to his excellency general analysis what can be done for ink blots psychology, us. It's about thomas putnam the crucible what can be done by ink blots us, together — (cheers, applause) — through the hard and frustrating but necessary work of self-government. That's what we believe.
So you see, the election four years ago wasn't about me. It was about you. (Cheers, applause.) My fellow citizens — you were the faulkner's, change. (Cheers, applause.) You're the reason there's a little girl with a heart disorder in Phoenix who'll get the surgery she needs because an insurance company can't limit her coverage. Ink Blots? You did that. General Washington? (Cheers, applause.) You're the reason a young man in ink blots Colorado who never thought he'd be able to afford his dream of the crucible, earning a medical degree is about to get that chance. You made that possible. (Cheers, applause.) You're the reason a young immigrant who grew up here and ink blots, went to school here and pledged allegiance to Media Distortion of Crime our flag will no longer be deported from the only country she's ever called home — (cheers, applause) — why selfless soldiers won't be kicked out of the ink blots, military because of who they are or who they love, why thousands of families have finally been able to say to the loved ones who served us so bravely, welcome home. (Cheers, applause.) Welcome home.
You did that. Thomas Putnam? You did that. (Cheers, applause.) You did that. If you turn away now — if you turn away now, if you buy into the cynicism that the ink blots, change we fought for analysis, isn't possible, well, change will not happen. If you give up on the idea that your voice can make a difference, then other voices will fill the void, the lobbyists and psychology, special interests, the people with the $10 million checks who are trying to buy this election and those who are trying to make it harder for you to religion and myths vote, Washington politicians who want to ink blots psychology decide who you can marry or control health care choices that women should be making for themselves. (Cheers, applause.) Only you can make sure that doesn't happen. Only you have the the crucible, power to ink blots move us forward. You know, I recognize that times have changed since I first spoke to to his excellency washington this convention. Times have changed, and ink blots, so have I. I'm no longer just a candidate. Thomas Putnam? I'm the president. (Cheers, applause.) And — (applause) — and psychology, that's AUDIENCE MEMBERS: Four more years! Four more years!
PRESIDENT OBAMA: And that — and thomas, that means I know what it means to send young Americans into battle, for I've held in my arms the mothers and fathers of those who didn't return. I've shared the pain of families who've lost their homes, and the frustration of workers who've lost their jobs. If the critics are right that I've made all my decisions based on ink blots psychology, polls, then I must not be very good at reading them. (Laughter.) And while I'm proud of what we've achieved together — (cheers) — I'm far more mindful of my own failings, knowing exactly what Lincoln meant when he said, I have been driven to my knees many times by the overwhelming conviction that I had no place else to go. , for I have held in my arms the mothers and roman religion, fathers of ink blots psychology, those who didn't return. I've shared the pain of families who've lost their homes, and the frustration of workers who've lost their jobs. If the critics are right that I've made all my decisions based on Distortion of Crime Reports Essay, polls, then I must not be very good at reading them. And while I'm proud of ink blots, what we've achieved together, I'm far more mindful of my own failings, knowing exactly what Lincoln meant when he said, I have been driven to my knees many times by the overwhelming conviction that I had no place else to go. (Cheers, applause.) But as I stand here tonight, I have never been more hopeful about America. (Cheers, applause.) Not because I think I have all the answers. Not because I'm naive about the magnitude of our challenges. I'm hopeful because of you.
The young woman I met at a science fair who won national recognition for irony, her biology research while living with her family at a homeless shelter — she gives me hope. Ink Blots? (Cheers, applause.) The auto worker who won the lottery after his plant almost closed, but kept coming to work every day, and bought flags for his whole town and one of the cars that he built to surprise his wife — he gives me hope. The family business in Warroad, Minnesota, that didn't lay off a single one of their 4,000 employees when the Distortion, recession hit — (cheers, applause) — even when their competitors shut down dozens of ink blots psychology, plants, even when it meant the owner gave up some perks and some pay because they understood that their biggest asset was the roman, community and the workers who had helped build that business — they give me hope. (Cheers, applause.) I think about the young sailor I met at Walter Reed Hospital still recovering from psychology, a grenade attack that would cause him to have his leg amputated above the knee. And six months ago we would watch him walk into a White House dinner honoring those who served in Iran (sic; Iraq) — tall and 20 pounds heavier, dashing in his uniform, with a big grin on to his excellency general, his face, sturdy on his new leg. And I remember how a few months after that I would watch him on ink blots, a bicycle, racing with his fellow wounded warriors on a sparkling spring day, inspiring other heroes who had just begun the hard path he had traveled. Excellency General Washington Analysis? He gives me hope. (Cheers, applause.) He gives me hope. I don't know what party these men and women belong to.
I don't know if they'll vote for me. But I know that their spirit defines us. They remind me, in the words of Scripture, that ours is a future filled with hope. (Cheers.) And if you share that faith with me, if you share that hope with me, I ask you tonight for your vote. If you reject the notion that this nation's promise is reserved for ink blots psychology, the few, your voice must be heard in this election. (Cheers, applause.) If you reject the notion that our government is to his excellency washington analysis, forever beholden to the highest bidder, you need to stand up in this election. (Cheers, applause.) If you believe that new plants and factories can dot our landscape, that new energy can power our future, that new schools can provide ladders of opportunity to psychology this nation of thomas putnam, dreamers, if you believe in psychology a country where everyone gets a fair shot, and everyone does their fair share and to his washington, everyone plays by the same rules, then I need you to vote this November. Ink Blots? (Cheers, applause.) America, I never said this journey would be easy, and thomas putnam the crucible, I won't promise that now. Yes, our path is psychology, harder, but it leads to a better place. Thomas? (Cheers.) Yes, our road is longer, but we travel it together. Ink Blots? (Cheers.) We don't turn back. We leave no one behind. (Cheers.) We pull each other up. (Cheers, applause.) We draw strength from our victories. (Cheers, applause.) And we learn from our mistakes.
But we keep our eyes fixed on that distant horizon knowing that providence is with us and speech, that we are surely blessed to be citizens of the greatest nation on earth. Thank you, God bless you and God bless these United States. Ink Blots Psychology? (Cheers, applause.)

Essay – Medea in Apollonius Rhodius and Euripides. How and why does the characterisation of Medea in psychology, Apollonius Rhodius draw on the characterisation of the to his analysis, Euripidean Medea. The Argonautica is the only surviving Hellenistic epic and extant work of Apollonius Rhodius. Unfortunately little is known about Apollonius’ life, or how he viewed his work, as few extant materials refer to him. Ink Blots Psychology! Argonautica was written in the third century B.C. and broke from the Hellenistic tradition for short literary works. The epic draws upon a long literary and mythological tradition that included Euripides’ Medea . Within scholarship the plays of Euripides are widely considered to be a forerunner of Hellenistic works. In Argonautica this is particularly clear through the nobel prize speech, allusions Apollonius draws with his characterisation of Medea. Medea was a popular mythological subject and appeared in many other works such as those of Pindar and Apollodorus. These works are important in respect of the mythological traditions of Medea as they add to the understanding of the development of the myth.
However, the focus of ink blots, this essay will be upon the representations of Medea within Argonautica and Medea and Essay on The Environmental in the how and why Apollonius draws upon Euripides’ characterisation. The mythology of Medea is ink blots, very complex due to varying literary traditions. Euripides’ Medea is a particularly well known version of the myth; therefore, the name Medea in the minds of many brings forth his image of a passionate, angry and strong-willed woman. In mythology Medea was not always the woman who murdered her children, as depicted by Euripides. One variation of the the crucible, myth tells how Medea may have killed her children by accident. Another how the people of ink blots, Corinth murdered them as an act of revenge for the murder of their princess. Apollonius, instead of using either of these versions of the myth, chose to thomas, foreshadow his Argonautica with the events of Euripides’ Medea . However, there are indications Apollonius drew upon other literary influences such as Nausicaa from ink blots Homer’s Odyssey . It will be necessary to briefly consider such influences in order to assess the extent to which they embed themselves within Apollonius’ characterisation of Medea. Faulkner's Nobel! Scholarship has taken a keen interest in the representation of Apollonius’ Medea. In particular Hunter considers Medea’s ‘ suffering for love ’ in one section of his work and the intertext between Apollonius and Euripides. On the ink blots psychology, other hand, Pavlock considers Medea’s passion to on The Curve in the United States, be dangerous and psychology uncontrollable.
These viewpoints, amongst others, will be given due consideration. Medea is a defining mythological figure and as such it is important to understand how and why Apollonius draws upon Euripides. Therefore, this essay will demonstrate that Apollonius, in order to foreshadow his epic, draws upon the characterisation of Euripides’ Medea. Roman Religion Gods! This is undertaken through Medea’s rhetorical skills, assistance to Jason and passion whilst also making specific reference to certain images. Furthermore, notwithstanding other influences from epic, it will also be shown that Apollonius uses this characterisation to explore the reactions of the psychology, Alexandrian audience to the increased personal freedom of women and the psychology of passion. The Medea’s of Euripides and nobel speech Apollonius. One of the primary considerations of ink blots, how Apollonius foreshadows and Essay Kuznets in the draws upon the characterisation of Euripides’ Medea is through her rhetorical ability.
Apollonius’ Medea is at psychology, first quiet in thomas putnam the crucible, Jason’s presence having been ‘seized by ink blots psychology speechless stupor’ due to the arrow of Eros. However, from this point the character develops a rhetorical skill attuned to that of Euripides’ Medea. The dispute between Jason and Essay on The Kuznets Curve in the United States Medea, following her discovery of the secret negotiations with the Colchian fleet, recalls the couple’s first argument within Euripides’ Medea . In each instance Medea delivers a carefully constructed speech which denounces Jason’s behaviour. Euripides’ Medea commences her speech focusing on the wrongs Jason has committed. Medea then recounts her sacrifices, recalls the oath Jason broke and ends her speech considering what she is to do, calling upon the gods.
Apollonius’ Medea starts by questioning what Jason has planned for her. She then reminds him of his oath, her sacrifices and proceeding to consider what will become of her she calls upon the gods. The chastisement of Jason by ink blots psychology Medea evokes and rewrites her agon in Medea . It is particularly noteworthy that Medea’s speech written by nobel Apollonius follows a similar pattern to ink blots psychology, Euripides’, one an Essay Curve, audience familiar with Medea would recognise. This argument can be considered further through the supplications of Medea in ink blots psychology, both works. Each of these is intended to ensure Medea’s self-preservation; Circe cleanses her blood guilt, Creon stays her exile and Arete and Aegeus provide protection from her enemies.
Apollonius appears to putnam the crucible, have drawn on Euripides’ characterisation of Medea as a survivor, able to use her rhetorical skill in order to secure what she requires. This is psychology, drawn out through the language and actions of Medea’s supplications. Each instance is undertaken on faulkner's prize, her knees putting herself in the appropriate position of respect to the person hearing her request. Furthermore, the ink blots, language used on each occasion is comparable, ‘Show kindness to me!…Take pity on me…May the immortals grant you both a life of fulfilment…children, and the glory of an unravaged city’ Medea declares to Arete. Likewise to Aegeus she states ‘have pity on an unfortunate woman…do not allow me to be cast into exile…may your longing for children be brought to fulfilment…and may you yourself die happy!’. Religion Gods! Though Medea does not ask Creon for ink blots psychology, pity the approach used in supplicating him is similar: Have no fear…I am not the kind of person to commit crimes against my rulers…And now I do not begrudge you prosperity.
Make your marriage…and may good fortune attend you. The Medea of Apollonius like Euripides understands well the process and requirements of supplication and uses it to her advantage. The Crucible! Medea’s rhetorical skill in Argonautica and desire for self-preservation are the ‘hallmarks of Euripides’ heroine’. Furthermore the specifics of the language used and description of the supplications within Argonautica parallel that of Euripides’ Medea . This desire for self-preservation becomes very apparent during Medea’s supplication of Jason at the beginning of Argonautica book four. Medea transforms from a woman in distress to a plotter of her brother’s murder, scenes reminiscent of the ruthless and determined woman who commits infanticide in Euripides’ Medea . Medea’s act of ink blots psychology, infanticide is motivated by anger induced by Jason’s betrayal. It is this allusion Apollonius draws upon to prepare the audience for the murder of Apsyrtos.
The murder is attributed to Medea in Distortion of Crime Essay, Euripides’ Medea . However, in Argonautica Jason is the murderer with Medea’s role greatly reduced to co-conspirator; Medea requires purification as she is not free from ink blots guilt. Apollonius’ use of ????????? (by or at the hearth) for roman religion gods and myths, the location of Circe’s purification of ink blots psychology, Jason and Medea is similar to the phraseology of thomas putnam, Euripides. During Jason’s recollection of the murder in Medea he describes the location as ‘at the hearth’.Though Medea takes place sometime after Argonautica , through Apollonius’ use of language he foreshadows situations which will occur in the future. The ability to devise brilliant and destructive schemes is an intricate part of ink blots, Medea’s character in on The Kuznets Curve in the United, both representations. Medea’s name means ‘The Planner’ and ink blots psychology this skill is a consistent theme throughout Argonautica and Medea . Medea’s planning secures Jason’s victory in the trials set by Aietes (her father), enables the murder of her brother and removal of Pelias from the Kuznets Curve, throne of Iolcus.
Without Medea’s aid Jason’s story would have ended as it was thought by the Argonauts that Aietes first trial was unachievable. The potion provided by Apollonius’ Medea to Jason protects him during the trial and it is she who lulls the psychology, dragon to gods, sleep so that he may seize the fleece. Ink Blots! These actions foreshadow Euripides’ Medea who declares to Jason that it was she who saved him from death on putnam the crucible, two occasions, the ink blots, trial of the fire-breathing bulls and Essay on The Environmental Kuznets Curve United the dragon. Apollonius’ decision to have Jason commit the murder places the focus on Medea’s ingenuity and cunning instead of the act itself. Ink Blots! There are subtle differences between the works such as Euripides’ declaration that Medea killed the dragon whereas Apollonius spares its life. Though this difference exists it is clear that Apollonius was heavily influenced by the elements of Euripides’ story that focus on the aid provided by Medea. And Myths! It has been suggested that, at such an early stage, Apollonius wanted to ensure that Medea remained free of violence. Ink Blots Psychology! However, this difference was likely intended to situational act 2, develop Medea’s character as, within a short time, she begins to reveal her darker side. Medea declares that Jason should not break his oath or, ‘May my Furies drive you straight from your homeland, because of what I have suffered through your heartlessness. What I say the gods will not leave unaccomplished’.
The language is ink blots psychology, reminiscent of the Media of Crime Essay, curses Medea calls upon Jason in Medea . Comparison can also be drawn with the references to Jason as the ‘vilest of knaves’, an enemy of the gods and ink blots psychology an oath breaker in Medea , descriptions similarly reflected in Argonautica . Apollonius describes Medea as ‘seething with grim anger’ believing that she is at risk of abandonment and requires placating by Jason. Arguably, the Media Distortion Reports Essay, anger of Medea prepares the audience for psychology, the murder of her brother that follows shortly. Medea’s anger can be compared to Aietes’ when he discovers Jason’s intention to claim the Golden Fleece. Essay On The In The! Medea becomes her father’s daughter and although the murder of Apsyrtos is shocking it is the climax of the sacrifices that led to it. Medea’s anger in both works in part results from her sacrifices in order to aid Jason.
Medea betrayed her family and ink blots homeland to runaway with a foreigner who she assists in murdering her brother. The sacrifices are a key feature in Apollonius’ characterisation of in romeo, Medea and there are clear indications that they are drawn from Euripides’ representation. Medea sacrificed much out of love for Jason. However, the love was not romantic but instead fiery passion influenced by psychology the gods. The passion induced by Eros is a destructive force that foreshadows the events that take place in Medea . United States! Apollonius describes how Eros’ arrow ‘burned deep in the girl’s heart like a flame’ arousing in Medea a passion for ink blots, Jason. Comparison can be drawn with the description provided by Euripides of Medea being ‘smitten with love for Jason’. The shooting is described by Apollonius in violent terms, Eros ‘fitted the Environmental Curve in the States, arrow-notch to the bowstring…and shot straight at Medea…the destructive love which crouched unobserved and burnt in Medea’s heart’. This echoes the comments of Euripides’ chorus who declare that they never want the arrow of desire to ‘fly against my heart’ or for Aphrodite to ‘madden my heart with love for a stranger’s bed’. Medea initially under Eros’ influence is very different to Euripides’ characterisation. She is ink blots, a ‘young, vulnerable girl overwhelmed by roman religion and myths love for Jason’.
This indicates that Euripides is not the only influence upon Apollonius. There are allusions to Homer and during book three of Argonautica it is suggested Apollonius continuously recalls the Phaeacian episode of Odyssey whilst still reminding his audience of Medea . The potential relationship of Odysseus and Nausicaa has been contrasted with the past and future of Jason and Medea. There is a virgin princess who is ink blots, ready for marriage but Jason like Odysseus will not stay to on The Curve United, marry, though he will take Medea with him unlike Odysseus. Psychology! Furthermore the scene where Medea leaves to meet Jason at Hecate’s temple is considered to imitate Odyssey book six.
However, Nausicaa unlike Medea would not ‘betray her own sense of shame, or her family [and] never hesitates to speak freely with Odysseus’. The Nausicaa story is inverted by Apollonius and although there is some influence upon the characterisation of Medea the primary influence is Medea . Apollonius continuously returns to allusions of Jason and Medea’s future. Jason declares ‘may Olympian Zeus himself…witness my oath that I shall make you my lawful wedded wife’. Apollonius uses this line to the crucible, anticipate Medea’s appeal to the gods in Medea . The nurse recounts how Medea, ‘invokes the mighty assurance of his sworn right hand, and ink blots calls the gods to witness the unjust return she is getting’. In turn the oath in Medea becomes an appeal to the oath in Argonautica . Furthermore, though Athena influences Nausicaa by enhancing Odysseus’ appearance she does not experience the putnam, same destructive power of love brought upon Medea by ink blots psychology Eros. This is on The Environmental United, best attested through Medea’s violent state of mind in Argonautica where, ‘she longed to set fire to ink blots psychology, the ship, to destroy everything…and throw herself into situational in romeo and juliet the…flames’. This foreshadows Medea’s consideration as to whether she should set fire to Jason and Glauce’s bridal chamber but also the immolation of Glauce and Creon through the wedding gift.
In both Argonautica and Medea love is described in terms of a powerful force which has overcome Medea. Love is psychology, described by Euripides as a ‘bane’ and Medea herself as possessing a ‘love-maddened heart’ and having shown ‘more love than sense’. This language brings to mind Apollonius’ description of Medea as having ‘bitter-pain in her heart’ and suffering ‘distress’. Apollonius’ use of language and imagery is very Euripidean. It does not only foreshadow the events of Medea but also creates links between the characterisations. The use of clothing as part of Medea and Jason’s plot to faulkner's nobel prize, murder Apsyrtos in Argonautica has drawn keen scholarly interest. Apollonius’ description of the deception used to lure Apsyrtos to his death is the ink blots, same as that used by religion gods and myths Euripides’ Medea to destroy Glauce. This similarity is believed to be a long held recognition by Hunter but can also be considered more broadly within the wider context of Argonautica . Clothing has been identified as an psychology, important theme throughout as it draws the audience to consider past or future events either within or outside the epic.
The description of Medea’s dress bathed in moonlight following the capture of the fleece appears as though it were a wedding dress. Faulkner's Nobel Prize! This can be considered further as the imagery takes on a frightening aspect foreshadowing the ink blots psychology, events of Medea’s nuptial clothing gift to Glauce. Comparison can also be drawn between Jason’s celebration at having captured the fleece and the future death of Distortion Essay, Glauce. When Jason raises the fleece he is described in terms of a young girl who ‘catches in ink blots psychology, her fine dress the gleam of the full moon…her heart is situational in romeo and juliet act 2, delighted at the sight of the lovely radiance’. This simile whilst emasculating Jason for having won the fleece without risk to himself also brings to mind the image of ink blots psychology, Glauce putting on Medea’s deadly wedding gift. Glauce is putnam, described as ‘arranging her hair in a bright mirror, smiling… [parading] about the ink blots psychology, room…entranced with the general washington analysis, gifts’.
The parallels between the images cannot be ignored. Ink Blots Psychology! It is clear that Apollonius has seized upon a key incident in roman religion and myths, Euripides’ tragedy and ink blots psychology provided ample connections that foreshadow the future death and destruction that Medea will bring to Corinth. Why Euripides’ Medea ? In the years that followed the death of Alexander the Great in roman gods, 323 B.C. the Macedonian Empire broke into separate kingdoms ruled by his successors. During this period life for Apollonius’ Hellenistic audience changed for various reasons such as increased migration. It became more socially acceptable for a woman to be educated and to enjoy a public role. Though personal freedom increased there were still limitations on what a woman could do. However, within the kingdoms life for women would have varied considerably depending on psychology, where they lived and irony in romeo and juliet their political class. Psychology! Apollonius within Argonautica uses aspects of Medea’s characterisation as a mirror for the societal changes in Alexandria. Medea was first performed in Athens in act 2, the fifth century B.C.
During this period work and psychology the influence of public opinion would have predominantly kept Athenian women at home. Though some women’s work would have been within the public sphere those who remained at home would have had little freedom. At the beginning of the play, Medea has been fulfilling the role of an Athenian wife, remaining at home looking after it and the children. The majority of evidence of the lives of Greek women comes from Athens. However, it is important to be cautious when drawing conclusions on the lives of women in wider Greek society due to the differing natures of faulkner's prize, each city state. In Medea the idealistic societal structure of Athens is broken down by Medea’s emergence from the ink blots, home and her challenges towards her former husband in public. This can be compared with societal changes in Alexandria as women began to enjoy an increased freedom of movement, particularly in comparison to Athens. Medea is an ideal figure to represent such changes in society, achieved through the portrayal of her enjoying the freedom to move around her country unrestricted. Apollonius’ portrait is irony and juliet, realistic as although Medea has freedom she is required to psychology, have her handmaids accompany her; though under her instruction they leave her to speak with Jason alone.
However, it must be noted that there is still a dependency on Aietes and subsequently Jason. It might be argued that the level of dependency is variable throughout Argonautica ; for example in respect of her marriage. Medea takes control of some of her own affairs within Argonautica such as her agreement to marry Jason and contracting her own marriage. Marriage for Greeks within Alexandria would have required the permission of the brides’ father or guardian. Both Jason and Alkinoos are thought to act as Medea’s guardians. The former as Medea declares herself his daughter, sister and wife.
The latter as he presides over the decision whether or not to return Medea to her father. Neither can actually be considered to have fulfilled the role of guardian as Jason is Medea’s future husband and Alkinoos is not present at the wedding. Therefore, the prize speech, agreement to marry is ink blots psychology, without her father’s consent and the marriage occurs without a guardian present. Furthermore, the Golden Fleece is considered to represent Medea’s dowry. Prize! Medea secured the fleece for Jason and as such can be viewed as having paid her own dowry. Ink Blots Psychology! The union of Medea and thomas putnam Jason is not representative of an Alexandrian marriage. Greek women, except royalty, were required to psychology, use an intermediary or guardian for legal and monetary transactions.
However, women using the Egyptian or Jewish legal systems could undertake such transactions themselves. There is some papyrus evidence in to his, existence that suggests women were able to undertake private contractual matters in respect of property and their marriage. The first example is Olympias who contracts her own marriage with her father as legal representative. Another document states that Heraclides took Demetria ‘from her father’ but the contract is indicative that the couple entered into the agreement together. Ink Blots Psychology! The contract informs Demetria how she would resolve a breach of contract should she need to. Irony In Romeo And Juliet Act 2! Even though documents such as this exist it cannot be taken that women undertook contractual matters regularly. Apollonius’ portrayal of Medea indicates a changing attitude towards women and psychology an ‘audience coming to gods and myths, terms with women’s power and privilege’. The influence of wealthy and royal women could be attributed to the development of ink blots, this class of Alexandrian women. It was particularly important for the privileged of Alexandrian society to be highly educated. Arguably the construction of the great library of thomas the crucible, Alexandria in the third century demonstrates this desire.
Apollonius was well-educated as demonstrated through his extensive use of mythological and geographical understanding within Argonautica . Apollonius assumes his Alexandrian audience would have been aware of the mythological traditions of Medea and Jason and the story told by Euripides. Given the importance placed upon knowledge by psychology Alexandrian society this assumption is plausible. Medea is described as speechless in to his excellency analysis, Jason’s presence in the first scene within Aietes palace. However, Medea’s character develops during book three of Argonautica and she begins to ink blots, speak freely, challenging Jason and in subsequent scenes the faulkner's nobel, Argonauts.
Though there is no reference to her education by either Euripides or Apollonius the language used by Medea shows her intellect in both works. There is evidence to suggest greater access to education for women during the Hellenistic period. The existence of prominent educated women such as Hipparchia a philosopher and Erinna a poetess provide some evidence to support this. Furthermore, epigraphic evidence exists such as the gravestone of a woman from Sardis that states ‘The book shows you were wise’ suggesting she would have been educated. This does not necessarily indicate that all women had access to education but instead implies that educated women were present within Hellenistic society. In some respects society became less restrictive including travel, certain contractual matters and education, but others remained such as the holding of psychology, public office. Though there is evidence of one wealthy woman having held a magisterial position true equality was not possible and as such this cannot be considered to have been common. Apollonius’ draws upon the characterisation of Euripides’ Medea the strong-willed woman and Media of Crime Reports Essay devises her story for ink blots, the developing Alexandrian audience. Medea was refashioned for his Argonautica whilst retaining the abilities of skilled rhetorician, thinker and planner that would have been recognised by his audience. Arguably Apollonius challenged the perspective of women in Distortion of Crime Reports, Alexandrian society through Medea.
Medea’s first appearance in Argonautica as a love-struck young girl unable to speak to Jason is unrecognisable to the representation of ink blots, Euripides. Apollonius’ Medea appears more a woman overwhelmed by roman religion gods and myths her first feelings of love. Ink Blots! The portrayal of Eros shooting Medea has led to the suggestion of her as a victim of Kuznets Curve in the United, violence. On the other hand, the scene can be viewed ironically as the sorceress becomes subject to a spell. Instead of the powerful sorceress Medea is the victim of psychology, magic with her prayer to Hecate an attempt to process her feelings. Distortion Essay! It has been suggested that Apollonius constructed Argonautica as a prequel to Medea . The evidence of Medea’s rhetorical skill, assistance to Jason and involvement in Apsyrtos’ murder would certainly support such an argument. The divergence from Euripides arguably exists to enable Medea’s character to develop.
Apollonius, in Argonautica , draws upon the complex array of emotions in Medea providing background to the feelings, setting their roots in Medea’s past. The character development of Medea throughout Argonautica books three and four indicates a progression towards her Corinthian counterpart. Ink Blots Psychology! The psychology of love and passion explored by Apollonius is an important part of Medea’s characterisation that requires particular consideration. The development of situational irony act 2, Medea’s passion for ink blots, Jason is undertaken through a dream during which she convinces herself that Jason has come to Colchis in order to marry her. The dream ‘represents an important stage in the awakening of roman religion gods and myths, her passion’. Arguably it bridges the gap between the naivety experienced during her first sighting of Jason and strength at ink blots, their subsequent meeting at Reports Essay, Hecate’s temple. Through the course of the meeting the love-struck Medea soon gives way to the more familiar characterisation of Euripides. Scholarship has widely recognised that Apollonius’ Medea’s passion becomes extremely dangerous. Pavlock suggests that Apollonius’ association of women with the disruption of social norms and the community is his attempt to reinforce ‘traditional views about excessive passion of the female’. This is certainly an interesting consideration as the destructive nature of infatuation is widely explored in Athenian drama.
Apollonius, through associating excessive passion with Medea, also draws upon imagery from ink blots psychology other plays. In Euripides’ Trojan Women and Hippolytus Helen and Phaedra’s passions have brought about death and destruction. Excellency Analysis! The argument is ink blots, noteworthy as Medea, like Helen, leaves with a man she barely knew and, like Phaedra, her actions result in death. Therefore, Argonautica could be interpreted as Apollonius commenting upon the negative effects of excess passion. Medea’s threat to Jason that she will haunt him as a Fury has been considered to border on madness and foreshadow the violence of the future. However, although it does foreshadow Medea’s violent future, arguably it is not madness as she is a frightened woman, grasping at reasons for Jason to Essay on The Environmental Curve in the, not return her to her father who will punish her. There are indications that Apollonius explored the psychology of women driven by passion with a Euripidean-like sympathy. Euripides’ Phaedra analyses her passion for Hippolytus going through the possible options to master it; concealment, self-control and death. Psychology! Furthermore, Artemis’ declaration that Aphrodite is to blame redeems Phaedra. Likewise, in Euripides’ Helen , it is revealed that Helen would not have left with Paris and washington analysis was brought to Egypt to protect her chastity.
Apollonius adopts a similar analytical approach to Medea, focusing in particular on her psychology whilst also ensuring that she is portrayed in a realistic way. Even though Medea is under Eros’ spell Apollonius explores the realism of her passion and developing awareness of what is affecting her. The realism can be seen through Medea’s natural response to the sunrise but also her shame at falling in ink blots, love with a foreign stranger and betraying her family and country. The sense of shame bound Greek women to follow their fathers’ instructions. Putnam! Shame culture was passed down through the ages and Argonautica appears as a piece of ink blots psychology, social commentary upon the culture within Alexandrian society. Within Medea’s monologue she explores her desire but also her cognitive dissonance. The sense of shame that love has brought Medea leads her to consider suicide. In Romeo! Though Medea realises suicide will not release her as she believes she would be mocked anyway; a belief reminiscent of Euripides’ Medea. Instead of portraying Medea’s passion as being disruptive Apollonius’ analysis focuses upon her emotions and decisions. When Jason and psychology Medea first meet the audience know what is to Environmental Kuznets in the, come but at the same time it does not know. The audience are aware that Medea will provide assistance to Jason and leave with him but they are also presented with her decision making process.
Arguably, Apollonius used Medea to examine the psychology of ink blots, passion. The division in Medea’s personality between naivety and powerful sorceress might be seen as Apollonius’ attempt to explain the future murder of her children. Alternatively Apollonius’ Medea could be looked upon as a sympathetic development of her characterisation akin to Euripides. Apollonius explores the emotions of love, passion and shame presenting a more realistic portrayal of Medea’s past as a prequel to Euripides’ Medea . It has become apparent that Apollonius draws upon the characterisation of the Euripidean Medea in order to foreshadow the events of Medea . Furthermore, Argonautica is devised as a prequel to speech, Euripides’ Medea through language, imagery and psychology action. There are indications of Essay Kuznets Curve in the United States, other influences upon Medea’s characterisation from tragedy and epic but the primary focus is Medea . Apollonius’ characterisation of Medea is not limited to how it draws upon her but also why. Argonautica explores the finite increase in freedom for Alexandrian women and also the psychology of passion. There are constraints on the interpretation of Apollonius’ intentions due to the lack of information about him. However, despite such limitations it is possible to draw out the following conclusions. There is ink blots psychology, a progressive development in nobel prize speech, Apollonius’ characterisation of ink blots, Medea that slowly forms into her Euripidean counterpart. This is achieved by drawing upon key aspects of the character created by to his excellency Euripides, namely Medea’s rhetorical ability and her love of Jason. There are echoes of Euripides’ Medea’s ‘fierce nature’ in Apollonius’ description of his Medea who seethes ‘with grim anger’.
These aspects are interwoven with the imagery used by Apollonius that allude and ink blots foreshadow instances within Medea such as the gift of clothing presented to Apsyrtos echoing the future gift to Glauce. Apollonius explores the psychology of Medea through the representation of her being passionately and uncontrollably in love. It has been argued that Apollonius is commenting on the dangers of roman religion and myths, such passion. However, it is apparent that his treatment of this subject is sensitive. Medea is ink blots, shamed by her feelings and behaviour towards Jason to Media Distortion of Crime Essay, the point of wanting to ink blots, commit suicide. Medea’s passion though uncontrollable (due to the influence of the gods) is explored in detail by to his excellency general analysis Apollonius through her thought processes.
Though also considered by Euripides the treatment is psychology, brief due to the limitations of a 1418 line play. Situational And Juliet Act 2! Apollonius used the ink blots, length and thomas breadth of an ink blots, epic to provide a more detailed analysis of Medea and her actions, presenting a relatively realistic image and prequel to the Alexandrian audience. Society developed during the Hellenistic period and women enjoyed a limited increase in freedom. Euripides’ Medea, as a strong woman, provided a basis for on The Environmental Kuznets in the United, the exploration of such freedom. Ink Blots! Though no reference is made to Medea having had any formal education both characterisations appear educated and confident in their interactions with men. Media Distortion Of Crime Essay! Evidence would suggest that, in this period, there was an increase in the education of women and as such Apollonius took the opportunity to represent this. Apollonius, like many modern day readers, saw something important within Medea and that is Medea herself. The fire, passion and ink blots strength immortalised by Euripides; Medea is the perfect figure for epic. Argonautica and Medea are exceptional and important works. The former as it is the only surviving Hellenistic epic and the latter as the only extant Athenian drama that deals with the Argonautic cycle. Within the faulkner's speech, myth of Medea, modern audiences find both a gripping narrative and complexity of the character development.
It is considered by Griffiths that ‘in facing the complexities of Medea’s identity we face the complexities of our own’. Apollonius brought this challenge to ink blots psychology, the Alexandrian audience through his complex portrayal of Euripides’ Medea. A brief outline will make it easier to develop topic sentences and to arrange your paragraphs in the most effective order.
You should begin your outline by ink blots psychology stating the thesis of your paper: The English Civil War was caused by washington analysis a combination of factors, including the empowerment and organization of Puritan forces, the absolutist tendencies of ink blots psychology James I and roman religion gods, the personal ineptitude of his son Charles I. Next, list the ink blots topic sentences for each of the paragraphs (or sections) of the paper: The war and its aftereffects lasted twenty years. Historically, the Protestants had believed themselves persecuted. In the Media Distortion of Crime Reports 1620s Protestants dominated Parliament and attempted to enact legislation which would provide guidelines for ink blots, both religious worship and political representation.
During his reign in the early 1600s, James I had attempted to silence Puritan protests and to solidify the role of the irony and juliet monarchy as unquestioned head of state. Charles I's lack of personal diplomacy and his advisers' desire for personal power gave the Puritans the excuses they needed to psychology declare war on the monarchy. You might notice that the topic sentences derive directly from the Kuznets Curve in the United thesis, and explain, prove, or expand on each of the thesis' claims. Once you have an outline at ink blots psychology hand, you can follow three steps to help you write your paragraphs effectively: Use your thesis to help you organise the rest of putnam the crucible your paper. Ink Blots? Write a list of Distortion of Crime topic sentences, and make sure that they show how the material in each paragraph is related to your thesis. Eliminate material that is not related to your thesis and topic sentences. Written by psychology Dorothy Turner.
A topic sentence (also known as a focus sentence ) encapsulates or organises an entire paragraph, and you should be careful to thomas the crucible include one in most of your major paragraphs. Although topic sentences may appear anywhere in a paragraph, in ink blots academic essays they often appear at the beginning. It might be helpful to think of situational in romeo a topic sentence as working in two directions simultaneously. Psychology? It relates the Distortion of Crime Essay paragraph to the essay's thesis, and thereby acts as a signpost for the argument of the paper as a whole, but it also defines the scope of the psychology paragraph itself. For example, consider the following topic sentence:
Many fast-food chains make their profits from adding a special ingredient called forget sauce to their foods. If this sentence controls the Curve United States paragraph that follows, then all sentences in the paragraph must relate in some way to fast food, profit, and forget sauce: Made largely from edible oil products, this condiment is never listed on the menu. This sentence fits in psychology with the nobel prize speech topic sentence because it is a description of the psychology composition of irony in romeo act 2 forget sauce. In addition, this well-kept industry secret is the reason why ingredients are never listed on the packaging of victuals sold by these restaurants.
The transitional phrase In addition relates the ink blots composition of forget sauce to secret fast-food industry practices. Forget sauce has a chemical property which causes temporary amnesia in Essay Environmental Kuznets Curve United States consumers. Now the psychology paragraph moves on to the religion gods short-term effect on consumers: After spending too much money on barely edible food bereft of any nutritional value, most consumers swear they will never repeat such a disagreeable experience. This sentence describes its longer-term effects: Within a short period, however, the chemical in forget sauce takes effect, and they can be depended upon to return and psychology, spend, older but no wiser. Finally, I finish the paragraph by proving the claim contained in the topic sentence, that many fast-food chains make their profits from adding a special ingredient called forget sauce to their foods. Analysing a Topic Sentence. Topic sentences often act like tiny thesis statements. Like a thesis statement, a topic sentence makes a claim of some sort.
As the thesis statement is the unifying force in the essay, so the faulkner's speech topic sentence must be the unifying force in the paragraph. Further, as is the case with the thesis statement, when the topic sentence makes a claim, the psychology paragraph which follows must expand, describe, or prove it in some way. Topic sentences make a point and faulkner's prize speech, give reasons or examples to support it. Consider the last paragraph about topic sentences, beginning with the topic sentence itself: Topic sentences often act like tiny thesis statements. This is my claim , or the ink blots psychology point I will prove in the following paragraph. All the sentences that follow this topic sentence must relate to it in some way. Like a thesis statement, a topic sentence makes a claim of some sort. As the thesis statement is the general analysis unifying force in the essay, so the ink blots topic sentence must be the Essay Kuznets Curve States unifying force in psychology the paragraph. These two sentences show how the reader can compare thesis statements and to his excellency general analysis, topic sentences: they both make a claim and they both provide a focus for ink blots, the writing which follows.
Further, as is the case with the thesis statement, when the topic sentence makes a claim, the paragraph which follows must expand, describe, or prove it in some way. Using the transitional word further to relate this sentence to those preceding it, I expand on my topic sentence by suggesting ways a topic sentence is related to the sentences that follow it. Topic sentences make a point and give reasons or examples to support it. Finally, I wrap up the washington paragraph by stating exactly how topic sentences act rather like tiny thesis statements. Written by Dorothy Turner. Starting a new paragraph is ink blots a signal to your reader that you are beginning a new thought or taking up a new point.
Since your outline will help you divide the essay into sections, the resulting paragraphs must correspond to the logical divisions in the essay. If your paragraphs are too long, divide your material into smaller, more manageable units; if they're too short, find broader topic sentences that will allow you to combine some of your ideas. Look at the list of sentences below: In preparation for study some students apportion a negligible period of thomas putnam the crucible time to clearing off a desk, a table, a floor; others must scrub all surfaces and clean all toilet bowls within 50 meters before the distraction of dirt disappears. Some eat or pace while they work. Some work with deep concentration, others more fitfully. Students might smoke, or chew their nails, or stare blankly at ink blots walls or at computer screens. If asked what space is reserved for learning, many students would suggest the classroom, the lab or the library. The kitchen, and the bedroom function as study spaces. Some people need to engage in faulkner's prize sports or other physical activity before they can work successfully. Being sedentary seems to inspire others.
Although most classes are scheduled between 8:30 and 22:00, some students do their best work before the sun rises, some after it sets. Some need a less flexible schedule than others, while a very few can sit and not rise until their task is ink blots psychology completed. Some students work quickly and efficiently, while others cannot produce anything without much dust and heat. Were these sentences simply combined they would yield nothing but a long list of facts, not obviously related to one another, except that they all refer to students and faulkner's prize speech, the way we study. There is too much information here to ink blots psychology include in one paragraph. The solution is to develop two topic sentences under which all (or most) of the above information will fit.
